2014 Honda Pilot – With an emphasis on comfort and space

The 2014 Honda Pilot is an 8-passenger SUV that is both comfortable and spacious. The vehicle offers lots of storage compartments, and a third-row seat that will be appreciated by those who need more room.

It also provides good handling, four-wheel drive, and several entertainment features to keep the backseat passengers from being restless.

One of the Pilot’s best features, without a doubt, is the amount of interior space that it provides. The vehicle offers 4,352 litres of interior volume (a bit less for the EX-L and Touring models), and can seat 7 passengers in addition to the driver due to a third-row bench. The third-row seats will fold with a 60/40 split, and the driver can also slide, recline or fold the second-row. When both rows are folded, a volume of 2,464 litres is provided.

As for the front passengers, the large storage compartment beside the driver is a nice addition. A mobile phone or a set of keys, for example, can be placed on the long cover. Push it open and the interior reveals two sections: one section will allow the buyer to charge certain electronic devices such as a mobile phone, and the other provides cup holders and a tray to stash items like an iPod, sunglasses, keys, etc.

The driver can also enjoy a 6-way or 10-way electronically adjustable seat, depending on the trim. With the Touring model, buyers can add on the convenience of “memory seat”. The latter trim will also provide heated front seats (as will the EX and EX-L), heated second-row seats, and leather-trimmed seating surfaces (also offered on the EX-L).

All models come equipped with a rearview camera, Bluetooth wireless technology that connects the mobile phone to the car, and cruise control. The Touring trim will offer a multi-angle version of the rearview camera that further adds to the comfort/ convenience of parking. The navigation system too, is equipped with the Touring.

Otherwise, parents eager to keep their children occupied can opt for Honda’s DVD rear entertainment system, which allows backseat passengers to watch movies on a 9-inch display.

As for what is under the hood, the 2014 Honda Pilot is equipped with a 3.5-litre V6 engine, which produces 250 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission, standard on all models. Towing capacity for the Pilot is rated at 2,045 kg when equipped with 4WD, which is available on the LX, and standard on all other models. The 2014 Pilot handles well, and feels stable when driving. It is also a great vehicle to consider for the winter months when driving over snow and ice.

In terms of fuel economy, ratings for the 2WD LX trim are 11.8/7.8 litres per 100 kilometres (city/hwy). As for the 4WD, the consumption rating is 12.3/8.2 with a combined average of 10.5 L/100km when in the city and on the highway.

The 2014 Honda Pilot has a starting MSRP of $34,990, and is a vehicle to consider for its comfort and spaciousness. The SUV also provides good handling, a steady feel when driving and good acceleration, along with 4WD. With a list of features to enjoy, especially when opting for the Touring trim, the 2014 Pilot should be on your list.
