2019 Honda Pilot: the fun to drive, 8-passenger family hauler

The 2019 Honda Pilot has a fresh new look with some important upgrades. Cabin tech and crash avoidance systems help make it an extremely modern way to travel.

Bolder styling has been applied to the flying wing grille. New lights and special light housing add to the design. Drivers will like the Canadian-exclusive Black Edition trim. It wears darkened headlights, darkened tail lights, black wheels and black gloss accents. Other models include the base LX, EX, EX-L Navi, Touring 8 Passenger, and Touring 7 Passenger.

The Pilot LX comes with a six-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. Honda AWD helps the driver in all types of weather. Stepping up to the Touring or Black Edition, drivers benefit from a nine-speed automatic. This system includes Intelligent Traction Management with a snow mode. It allows the Pilot to uses second gear for more low-speed acceleration.

With either transmission, drivers benefit from the powerful 3.5-litre V6. This engine generates 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. For better fuel economy, Honda has upgraded its Idle Stop function. This allows for quick action when the driver is ready to resume travel. Fuel economy is 13/9.3 L/100 KM City/Highway.

For big families, the standard 8-passenger layout has a centre 3-passenger bench. With a 7-seat layout, there are second-row Captain’s Chairs. Honda has made third-row entrance easy with its One-Touch Walk-in feature. Parents can talk to the kids on the back row with CabinTalk. Another Honda innovation, CabinControl lets passengers use their phones to control their climate settings, the available rear entertainment centre or the Pilot audio system.

LX editions start you off right with heated seats, a remote engine starter, and tri-zone programmable thermostats. A power driver’s seat and Honda LaneWatch are added to the EX. Leather upholstery and a heated steering wheel are among the EX-L Navi model’s special amenities. Touring models have a hands-free power tailgate and blue ambient lighting. If you choose the Black Edition, Honda adds red ambient lighting to the cabin and red accents to the leather seats.
